Argentine Designers

The Argentine Republic does not want us to forget that fashion reflects cultural identity. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs instigated a show
at New York Fashion Week to encourage thoughtful examination of
the historical, cultural and social origins of garments worn in their beautiful Latin American country. A second main objective was to raise awareness amongst international markets and ultimately increase exports
of Argentine fashion and accessories.

Scholars have come to the conclusion that clothing is more about social identity and self- expression than sexual attraction. The Geopolitical implications of a show such as this are quite substantial due to the realization of nationalism and the rationalization of ideological pursuits.

Over the years Argentina’s fashion industry has been a driving force behind job creation, investment, and cultural dynamism. Out of over 80 designers submitted, six were chosen by an American jury to present their collections at New York Fashion Week: Cardon, Cora Croppo, Daniela Sarori,
Mariana Dappiano, and Min Agostini.  The designers seek to reclaim their Latin American identities, to connect with their heritage, and revive it in
a contemporary context. It is refreshing to acknowledge fashion design that is born out of such intentions.
